You are following the Slow Read, which begins with the Prologue on Saturday 10 October and reads a chapter a week. Read ahead? Choose the last chapter you have finished. The site hides anything from a chapter you have not reached; this is proof of reading, never of buying, and a library copy counts.

Some marks on a ledger page are not signs at all but frames around them. A ring around a word makes it a world’s name.

This part draws on Ch 7. It shows when your spoiler level reaches it.

Frames around words
FrameMeaning
A ringThe name of a world
A double ringUnder seal, or in quarantine
A struck ringA world not kept
An arch over a wordA person’s name: a dreamer is a door

A world in the ledger has a name built from what defines it, ending in -ni (orb), -rin (gate) or -n (place), then its number in base seven, then its standing.

Tok (stone) and ni (world) make Tokni. You will learn to read the number in Row 5.

  3. Read this world’s name.
  4. ta (between) and rin (door) make a word for a place full of doors. What is tarin?
