The readers confirmed the table. All forty-eight sounds are shown.
How the signs work
Every sign is a key. The stroke is the shank and gives the consonant; the mark is the bit and gives the vowel. Eight strokes and six marks make forty-eight signs.
The book prints twenty-nine of them. The line on the back cover gives away the sound of twenty-five; the readers have worked out the rest, and every sound is shown below.
