Your name, sealed
The desk keeps a register. Sign it as you would sign anything you mean, and your name is set in the Code: every sign of it struck on the one spot, inside a double ring, where nobody can read it back. The desk included.
You will be issued an Earth. Earths are numbered in order of arrival, beginning with the one after Kate’s. A number is an address, not a rank. It confers no standing and buys nothing.
One day, announced at the desk beforehand, the seals are broken where they stand, and your card shows your name in the Code at the same address.
Earth V.24498
Sealed. The desk cannot read it either.
In plain English
- We keep the name exactly as you type it, its spelling in the Code, its Earth number and the time you sealed it. Nothing else is attached to it: no email address, no account and no IP address.
- Your name never appears on your card, in its address or in its preview image. The card shows the sealed mark and the Earth number.
- Names unseal only on a date we announce first, here and by email to everyone who ticked “Also tell me when the names unseal”. Your card will then show your name written in the Code with its reading underneath, for example ke·i·t for Kate, at the same address. If you don’t want that, delete it before then.
- After you seal a name you get a private delete link. Keep it somewhere safe: it is the only way to delete the name yourself, and we show it once. Deleting removes the name and its spelling for good; its number is never reissued.
- Sites where you have shared your card may keep showing the old preview image for a while after it unseals or is deleted, because they keep their own copies.
- For now the tool reads names written in the Latin alphabet. Spellings follow provisional rules that a script review may still change before the names unseal; if a rule changes, we update your spelling to match.
- Please seal your own name, or a name you go by. This site is for people aged 16 and over.
