Row 7: The Walker

Composition

How far have you read?

Choose chapter

You are following the Slow Read, which begins with the Prologue on Saturday 10 October and reads a chapter a week. Read ahead? Choose the last chapter you have finished. The site hides anything from a chapter you have not reached; this is proof of reading, never of buying, and a library copy counts.

You have the signs, the words and the grammar. Now write something nobody has written before.

A good first composition is short. Take a sentence you need (a greeting, a promise, a warning), find its words in the dictionary, put the verb second, and choose its ledger word: ka if it is done, na if it is to come, kha if it is not.

Nu kha ri tin

person not cross alone

No one crosses alone.

When a word is missing, the translator marks it sokha (unlisted). You can leave it in English, build it from roots you know, or propose it to the Ledger Desk.

Somka is invented, for a novel. Write anything you like in it; just never present it as an ancient or sacred language, because it is neither.

Try it

  1. Write Nu kha ri tin, no one crosses alone.

    What you have written

    Nothing yet.

  2. Write three sentences of your own. Nobody marks this: there is no right answer, only yours.

    Nobody marks this.
