Choose chapter

You are following the Slow Read, which begins with the Prologue on Saturday 10 October and reads a chapter a week. Read ahead? Choose the last chapter you have finished. The site hides anything from a chapter you have not reached; this is proof of reading, never of buying, and a library copy counts.

Names from other worlds are written by how they sound, not by how they are spelled. Sounds that Somka does not have take the Visitor's tick.

English is spelled by sound here, not letter by letter. Kate is written keit: ke, then i, then t. Tom is to, then m.

keittom
Kate (ke·i·t) and Tom (to·m).

The Visitor's tick

A hairline tick at the head of a sign shifts its consonant, so that a name from anywhere can be written. Dreamers visit, and so do their names.

A few sounds are spelled with two signs or with a vowel: w is written as u, and y as i; ch is t then sh; x is k then s.

This part draws on Ch 12. It shows when your spoiler level reaches it.

The name tool spells your name by sound and explains each choice. Every spelling is provisional until the script reviewers have signed it off, and a reviewed spelling can change before it is printed anywhere.

  3. What does the tick turn the loop into?
  4. Which vowel is w written as?
